Name My Baby

I'm not totally freaking out yet, but this baby will be here in 7 weeks and we still have not decided on a name. So, I'm taking it to my bloggy peeps.

Please help me think of a name for this new baby girl! And if I use your suggestion, I will send you a $50 gift card to Bed, Bath & Beyond or Best Buy...your choice.

Here are some guidelines...

1. Our last name is very generic and only one syllable (e.g. Smith), so the first name should be something long and multi-syllabic.

2. I like unusual, but not weird. (No Apple, Tallulah, etc.)My first daughter's name is Anabella and I really like that we have yet to meet another little girl with her name.

3. No names that have been in the "top 10" within the last 10 years. Here's a listing of those. http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

4. We have been kicking around the names "Danni" and "Sterling," so if you can think of a cool first/middle name to go with one of those...that meets my "how it sounds and flows" approval...you will win the gift certificate.

5. Foreign names are good, but please refer to #2.

6. If I choose your name, you can be this child's unofficial God parent...feel free to send gifts and money on all the major holidays. ha!

I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with!

I'd like Miranda, but there's the Sex in the City association. Also, not sure if you want you and your two daughters to all have names that end in the same "A" sound. That would also rule out Veronica (though I'm not thrilled with the nickname "Roni/Ronnie" that I've seen some use).

This leaves me with Phoebe (we're far enough from the finale of Friends), Zoe, and one that has a special meaning to me, Beyonce.

I know a "Dani," and she's from Texas. Middle name Lee, I believe. She's not the most ambitious gal I've ever met. (That's as nicely as I can put it.) And I also have mixed feelings on names that are common nicknames for other names (in this case, Danni for Danielle). For example, my old college roommate's name is "Billy." It's not short for anything, that's just his name. On one hand, if the parent always knows they want to call the kid by that nickname, why not make that the official name? On the other hand, he'd get frustrated when people would call him "William." And it's weird when he submits a job application or something and it says "Billy," because people initially think he's being informal.

The name Sterling, that makes me either want to shout "YEEEE HAWWWWW," or play football (see Sterling Sharpe). However, this is hard to nickname. This can be good or bad, depending on your preference. It's good for me, as I personally don't like names that are so easily nicknamed that people would do it without asking. (A simple example would be a "Michael" who doesn't like to be called "Mike.")

Before Hunter was born (actually it was before the ultrasound), we kinda knew he was going to be a boy because all we had were girl names. Our first choice was Nichole Renee'. I looked up Nichole for you and the only thing that came close was Nicole (that specific spelling) was ranked number 11 in 1994, but that was more than ten years. I think Nichole Sterling has a nice ring to it and if (god forbid) she ever became a porn star or anything; she could always use Nikki Sterling as her stage name… now THAT has a ring to it. What? Not an image you were looking for? Either way, I like Nichole.

We also really liked Kimber, but that damn association with Nip Tuck was really bothering us. Hey, Kimber hasn't been in the top 1,000 for that last 15 years – bonus!

I have a friend who named her daughter Jenna and I have always liked that name, but again with the porn star thing… sorry.

How about Grace or Summer – those are both nice.

Lastly, I offer Lexie. I think Lexie has a nice uniqueness to it and Annabelle and Lexie sound like cool sister names.

A little name story. About a month ago my husband and I were waiting for a table in a local restaurant. There was another couple there with their young daughter, her name was Asia. I thought that was a really cool name, but not for her. She was of Asian or Oriental descent. I guess I could throw Asia in to the mix as well. I still think it's a cool name.

Good luck! I know the name thing can be such a hard decision. We actually didn't name Hunter until the day after he was born. I couldn't decide if he was Hunter, Christian or Jared. Of course now, I couldn't see him named anything else.

My personal favorite is Isabelle Marie however Isabelle seems a bit too close to Anabella.

I also like Autumn, Nicolette, and Sidney.

One of my coworkers likes Montana.

Another coworker likes Hayley, Kelsey, and Alyssa.

A friend of mine has a daughter name Allia pronounced (awl-ya) and she's adorable, so I think that's a good sign...goes well with Annabella too.

Me? I went with one syllable names, I want something I can say when I'm angry...

Genevieve
Guinevere(nickname-Winnie)
Aurora
Annora (nickname Nora?)
Liliana (much preferred to plain old Lily or Lillian)
Adela
Luisa
Helena
Marisol
Lucia(nickname Lucy)
Carolina

Middle Names:( I heart one syllable middle names)
Jane
Claire
Tess
Mae

I recommend you bypass trendy names and go for a rarely used classic. I gurantee that it'll be refreshing and stand out in a class full of Madisons and Kaylee/Kylies.

I'm with Omar. Danni is too nicknamey and insubstantial on its own. Kylie Minogue's sister is named Danni. I don't think Sterling is ready for gender-bending yet, and I think little girls should have feminine and pretty names.

Elasticwaistbandlady -
My middle name is Helena - I think it's a great name and you certainly don't hear of many.

Excellent choice! ;)

I got some more that I really love but forgot yesterday:
Felicia/Felicity(I think the TV show has been off the air long enough for this name to work again)

Anastasia(pronounced AWW-Nah-Staw-See-Uh. You know, softer. I thought it would work well with four-syllabled Anabella)
I suck at making pronunciation guides.

Rosalie
Natalia
Natasha/Sasha

Avery
Madeline
Chloe
Elastic

I'm going to keep coming back with more, just to increase my chances of winning. WIN WIN WIN.

elasticwaistbandlady said...

You lose, Omar. Madeline and Chloe have both been in the top 10, I think. If not in the U.S., then somewhere in the world. Chloe is insanely popular in England right now.

More one-syllable middle names- June
Nell
Eve

Special K ~Toni said...

Well- I hope I can get in here also- Toni Paige. Yep- my name. Never met anyone else with it.

Special K ~Toni said...

I also like Eleanor- good strong name-looks great on a resume, but you can call her Ellie.

I like the name Nicolette that Carol suggested. It reminds me of the name Nicola that seems to be a very popular name in Australia. (As I've learned while working for an Australian company...)

Also:
Larissa
Brigette
Sabrina
Adrianne
Focaccia

Rhonda Sloan said...

I think Elastic and Focaccia are my favorites so far. Oh, and Nikki Sterling, so my girl is all poised to be a porn star. :)

Keep them coming!

P.S. Sterling is a family name from my husband's side, which is why it is in the running. (Anabella is named after my grandmother) And Danni would be short for Danielle, a potential homage to my hubby since he isn't getting a boy...and I don't think I will be doing this again!

Elissa

I don't mind Sterling as a middle name, btw. And Danielle is fine too, I thought "Danni" was going to be the full name.

Chloe is closer to the top 15 than I thought, but it has never been IN the top 15. Neither has Madeline. And we LIVE in the US, so its British popularity is moot! (though Chloe is currently #1 in Australia.) "Giuseppina

omar said...

Hey, what happened to the rest of my comment?! It went something like:

"Giuseppina" is #1 in Italy right now, but that shouldn't disqualify it!

Then I said,

Speaking of, I'd like to throw Giuseppina in as a possibility.

But it was funnier the first time around.

Cassandra and you can call her Cassie (or Kassandra/Kassie). I think it goes nicely with Annabella, but doesn't sound too similar.

As for just names to go with Danni or Sterling

Danni Lynne
Amanda Sterling

I have to tell you, I always loved the name Madison. And no one named their girls Madison. Until about a year before I finally got me a girl. By then it was already almost immediate in the top ten and I just couldn't do it. I was so sad.

If I had another girl she would be Katharine or simply Kate. Kate is just such a good strong name for a girl. Hey, that's a good one. Add that to my list of entrants to your contest. It goes nicely with Annabella as well.

Oh I hope I win. I've always wanted to be an unofficial godmother. (So I've wanted to be a fairy godmother too...like that's going to happen.)

Anonymous said...

p.s. my middle name is Veronica. I've never been enamored with it so I dropped it for my maiden name when I got married. Not a fan of "Roni," but I could've maybe gone with Nikki."

elasticwaistbandlady said...

Danni Lynne? No. Just plain no.

She's not raising a kid with the same name as Anna Nicole Smith's baby.

I like Cassandra alot, though.

Anonymous said...

Sorry. I forgot. (Although it is a cute name on my cousin.)

Ann(ie) said...

My faves are:

Natalie
Charlotte
Ella

So many good ideas...and a few more(ideas, not necessarily good).

Elena Danille
Elizabeth
Caitlyn
Kirsten

I do like Chloe and Amanda

Ok, here were our name rejects. Not necessarily because we didn't like them, but because we didn't like the way they sounded w/ our last name or we knew someone with that name and didn't want them to think we named our kid after them, etc.

-Julia
-Audrey
-India
-Danica (yes, as in Ms Nascar, but also as in the actress that played Winnie Cooper! and could also have the nickname Danni!)
-Leah

I guess the most I could do for you is 3 syllables. I'm sorry I'm such a simpleton!

Oh man, how come I didn't have Internets when I was preganant? So many good choices.

Alexa (so then you have Alex of Lexi).

That's all I have. May the best man win.
Omar.

THANKS EVERYONE! I really appreciate all the feedback. A few of your suggestions are "in the running" so to speak, but feel free to come back and add more if you think of additional names. We won't be making a decision for a few more weeks (because we are indecisive!), but I promise to post the winner/name as soon as possible.

I would like to suggest

Audrianna

pronounced Audrey-Anna) -- I really wanted to name my first born that, but her dad nixed it and so now she's Audrey.

Danni is a great name, in fact its my name perfect for a girl.
